"And may there not  be a single place in Cuba where the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) is not constituted, and not a single revolutionary woman who is not a member of the Federation of Cuban Women," Fidel Castro said on August 23, 1960.

On March 8, 2013, at the IX Congress of the FMC, José Ramón Machado Ventura stated that if Fidel's idea of creating the FMC was brilliant, timely and truly forward-thinking, "so was his wise decision to put Vilma Espín Guillois at the head of the nascent women's organization."

On November 3 the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) adopted a resolution against the U.S. embargo against Cuba, with 185 votes in favor, two against, and two abstentions.

A brief look back at the history of the embargo reveals how unwarranted the euphoria that ensued after this "victory" in the official press was, and points to the real reasons for the votes recently cast.

In "Some truths about the illegal migration of Cubans", an article published in the newspaper Granma on March 31, Leidys María Labrador, its author, gives us a lesson on how to explain the causes of the exodus with a series of evasions and half-truths. "The U.S. government is following a script, seeking to portray Cuba as a failed state," grumbled Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla on Wednesday, November 10, during his appearance before the accredited diplomatic corps in Cuba.

Among the defining elements that characterize a failed state, those related to its economy are fundamental.

Public demonstrations - a social phenomenon never seen in Cuba in the last six decades - broke out across the country, simultaneously, with a wave of massive protests on 11 July.

The concept of public demonstration entails each person's right, individually or in groups, to express themselves in public spaces. Its underpinnings are the freedoms of expression, association and assembly. It includes the organization of the demonstration and the summoning of people to it. It is a civic right that allows citizens to exercise their political power and influence those in power.

Raúl Castro. DIARIO DE CUBA

In 1958, according to that year's sugar almanac, Cuba produced 72% of everything consumed in the country, and imported the other 28%. To improve these figures, in 1959 Fidel Castro said that agricultural production would be significantly increased, the consumption capacity of the peasant population would double, and Cuba would resolve its grave chronic unemployment situation, achieving for the people a standard of living higher than that of any another nation.

Chicken and eggs

The age-old dilemma about which came first, the chicken or the egg, which since ancient times has generated so many philosophical disquisitions, has its very own version in Cuba; more down-to-earth, but no less useless. This one is about the relationship between productive incapacity and insufficient salaries, and we have seen it several times before.

According to the 1958 sugar industry almanac, a year before the revolutionaries took power Cuba produced 72% of everything that was consumed in the country, and imported the other 28%. Today it produces approximately 20% and imports 80%. There were inequalities to work out, but the economy was growing. The secret: only what is produced can be distribute.
